IVY REFERENCE: Commissioning Editor

At Ivy we create beautiful reference books for discerning, curious readers, across subject areas ranging from ornithology and sports science to architecture, natural history and economics. Our titles maintain the highest editorial, design and production standards, and we work with publishing partners all over the world.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, creative and self-motivated Commissioning Editor to join us. Working as part of a small, dedicated Reference team, you will need an abundance of original ideas, an eye for appealing design and a knack for visualising and communicating your concepts, as well as an understanding of the financial and commercial side of the business. You will bring keen market awareness and demonstrable interest in relevant subject areas to the role. The ability to work as part of a small team is important, and some experience of the process of publishing would be an advantage. You will be based in our offices in Lewes in the heart of the Sussex Downs.

SKILLS
Essential

  • Strong interest in relevant subject areas, in particular natural history and popular science – Ability to come up with consistently well thought through, original ideas for new books and new strands to grow a list with an already-strong track record
  • Good understanding of the budgets and processes involved in creating books – Well organised and self motivated
  • Build and maintain strong author/contributor relationships – Creative with a strong visual sense and a keen eye for detail
  • Ability to present ideas clearly and persuasively – Happy working in a busy office environment as part of a close-knit team

Desirable

  • Some understanding of international publishing markets
  • Previous experience of reference publishing

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Research and development of new ideas:
  • Create concepts (or receive submissions)
  • Research market and competition
  • Research contributors (authors, illustrators)
  • Develop format and spec
  • Present at New Ideas Meeting
  • Create prospective budget for approved ideas
  • Request print quotes
  • Develop budgets and costings for commissioning meetings

Develop presentations for approved ideas:

  • Commission authors, consultants (and sometimes illustrators) for blads
  • Review, approve and edit material as it comes in
  • Produce blads and sales material for presentations

Commission contributors for live books:

  • Create schedules and develop outlines and flatplans for presentations
  • Create contracts for contributors
  • Manage and edit live book until Project Manager is able to take over

Additional:

  • Produce material for catalogues
  • Update database
  • Attend bookfairs and relevant events
  • Any other duties as the Publisher may reasonably require

IVY KIDS: Editorial Assistant

At Ivy Kids, we create beautiful non-fiction books for thoughtful, creative and curious children. Our titles combine innovative design and highly original content, inspiring children to engage with the world around them. An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic Editorial Assistant to join our team. It goes without saying that you must be organised, motivated, and work well as part of a team. You will also need an eye for detail, a positive approach to problem solving and the ability to multitask effectively. This is an entry-level position. However some experience of publishing processes would be an advantage.

SKILLS

Essential

  • Strong interest in children’s publishing
  • Well organised and self motivated Creative with a strong visual sense and a keen eye for detail
  • Good communicator with strong written skillS
  • Happy working in a busy office environment as part of a close-knit team

Desirable

  • Familiar with InDesign and Photoshop
  • Previous experience working at a children’s publisher

JOB DESCRIPTION

General tasks

  • Day-to-day assistance to the managing editor and art director
  • Ensuring project files are up to date on the shared server
  • Maintaining and updating information on the database
  • Creating and updating the list of freelance suppliers
  • Liaising with in-house departments and freelance suppliers
  • Sending briefs and contracts to freelance suppliers
  • Supplying and updating sales material and managing sales material requests
  • Sending out author/contributor copies
  • Downloading/uploading files to and from suppliers, clients and contributors.
  • Creating PDFs and preparing printed materials as required
  • Any other duties as the publisher may reasonably require

Editorial tasks

  • General project research, including market research as required
  • Helping to create book plans
  • Proofreading and taking in amendments on screen
  • Helping with image research and selection, creating and updating picture logs, compiling picture credits and researching artwork references

Assisting the Art Director

  • Managing, filing and processing supplied artwork
  • Setting up simple, template-based documents as required
  • Testing/making paper-craft projects
  • Helping with researching potential new illustrators and freelance designers
  • Ordering high-resolution images from picture libraries
  • Basic technical support, for example tidying final files

Other Freelance

Design
The Ivy Group is constantly on the look out for exceptional book designers to work on presentations and live books. If you can mix creative typography and layout, are a good problem-solver and can think editorially, we might have a job for you.

Editorial
We use writers, editors, proof readers, Americanizers and indexers on a regular basis, and have a need of more good people in all categories.

Illustrators
We commission lots of artwork, created both digitally and traditionally. Our books are varied and so are the range of styles we use to illuminate them.

Mac
We need macworkers who are familiar with InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator, and can get to grips with the make up of complex integrated, illustrated books through to repro level. The majority of work is done in-house at our Lewes offices, although there are also some opportunities to work out of house.

Picture Researchers
The Ivy Group occasionally need professional picture researchers to work on our non-fiction, co-edition, illustrated titles. Extensive experience of searching for images, rights clearance, fee negotiation and budget management essential, as is a creative eye and a diverse range of sources with the contacts to match.
